'Don't fight squeeze on expenses' MP brands resistance 'pathetic'.

A MERSEYSIDE politician urged fellow MPs to accept in full a major squeeze on their expenses and allowances.

Birkenhead's Frank Field said it would be "pathetic" if they tried to water down proposals by sleazebuster Sir Christopher Kelly Sir Christopher William Kelly KCB (born 18 August 1946 in Bromley, Kent, England), is the current Chairman of the NSPCC and a former senior Civil Servant. He is the son of Dr. Reginald Kelly (1917-90), a former President of the Association of British Neurologists. .

The former welfare minister said: "It would be absurd to appoint an independent panel and then reject its recommendations.

"We need to put our own house in order."

But Mr Field is continuing to challenge auditor Sir Thomas Legg's order to pay back pounds 7,000 in cleaning and home expenses because new rules were imposed retrospectively.

He said: "The Kelly proposals look to the future and that is fair enough. But Legg's demands were not."

Mr Field's appeal followed attempts to undermine the Kelly report.

 said the Kelly crackdown did not explain the legal basis by which he would be forced to sack his wife Fran as his constituency secretary.

He said: "Fran, who is a qualified teacher, works considerably more hours on behalf of my constituents than her pay warrants."

Mrs Miller is paid within the agreed parliamentary scale and Mr Miller said it would be a breach of confidence to reveal exactly what an employee gets.

Sir Christopher said his proposals struck a balance between public disgust over the expenses scandal and the need to give MPs a fair deal.

His recommendations included banning MPs employing relatives at the taxpayers' expense.

Existing employees will be phased out over five years.

There will also be no more pounds 25-a-night subsistence claims.
