'Difficult' talks hit deadlock; PAY DEAL.


BUSINESS leaders and unions were locked in talks last night as efforts continued to reach a national pay deal.

Brian Cowen Brian Cowen (Irish: Brian Ó Comhain; born 10 January, 1960) is a senior Irish Fianna Fáil politician and the current Tánaiste of Ireland.  met with union leaders at Government Buildings as both sides were cautious on the likelihood of any deal being reached.

Irish Congress of Trade Unions The Irish Congress of Trade Unions (ICTU), formed in 1959 by the merger of the Irish Trade Union Congress (founded in 1894) and the Congress of Irish Unions (founded in 1945), is a national trade union centre, the umbrella organisation to which trade unions in both the Republic of  chief David Begg said the talks have been "the most difficult" but expected a result "one way or the other" today.

Ibec's Brendan McGinty warned it was by no means certain "we will get the right outcome".

He said: "The financial turmoil in the last 24 hours makes it even more important we exercise control over the things we can in our economy."
