bridegroom forced a packed jet to divert to Shannon, a court was told yesterday.

Judge Joseph Mangan heard how boozed-up builder Scott Watson was abusive and insulting on the Monday night flight from Mexico to Manchester.

Worried air crew diverted to Ireland amid fears the 33-year-old Englishman was a danger to other passengers.

Watson, of Manchester Road, Floest, Derbyshire, admitted being drunk and using threatening language on the flight when he appeared at Athenry District Court, Co Galway, yesterday.

The accused also accepted his behaviour was likely to cause serious offence or annoyance to other passengers and crew.

The court was told Watson had recently got married in Mexico.

He had been taken off the flight at Shannon early yesterday morning leaving his new wife to travel home alone to England.

Refusing bail, Judge Mangan remanded Watson to appear before Shannon District Court tomorrow.

Garda Chris Power told the court he had arrested the accused at Shannon Airport Shannon Airport (IATA: SNN, ICAO: EINN), or Aerfort na Sionna in Irish is an airport in Ireland. Approx 3.7 million passengers travelled through Shannon in 2006, making it the second busiest in Ireland by passenger movements.  at 7.05am yesterday and added that Watson had made no reply after he was charged.

Giving evidence, Supt Noel Kelly Noel Kelly can refer to:
  • Noel Kelly (curator), Irish art curator
  • Noel Kelly (footballer), Irish association football player.
described how the captain of a Thomas Cook flight from Cancun to Manchester made the unscheduled stop after Watson became disruptive on board.

He said Watson was insulting and very aggressive on the flight.

Supt Kelly added that he believed the accused had no previous convictions although it would be Thursday before any records could be produced.

Watson's solicitor Ms Rachel Dobson asked that her client be released on bail.

She said Watson was alone in Ireland at the current time.

The solicitor claimed Watson would comply with the strictest bail conditions imposed by the court.

These included giving up his passport and signing on daily at a Garda station.

But Judge Joseph Mangan refused the request and remanded Watson in custody.
