'Can do' AIANYS prez honored for policy work.


Terrence E. O'Neal, AIA, president of the American Institute of Architects The American Institute of Architects (AIA) is a professional organization for architects in the United States. Organized in 1857, the Institute conducts various activities and programs to support the profession and enhance its public image, including periodically awarding the AIA  New York State (AIANYS) and principal of Terrence O'Neal Architect LLC (TONA TONA Titles of Nobility Amendment (1810 proposed amendment to the United States Constitution)

), recently received a Special "Architecture as Public Policy" Citation at the 139th annual meeting of AIA New York Chapter at The Center for Architecture, 536 LaGuardia Place in New York City New York City: see New York, city.

. President of AIA New York Chapter Mark Strauss presented the Citation, saying, "A civic-minded architect with a passion for public engagement, Terrence E. O'Neal has been the 'can-do' person on the boards of both the New York Chapter and the Center for Architecture Foundation."

"As 2006 AIA New York State president, he has brought renewed energy to the state organization," Strauss added. "Four months into office, he developed and hosted 'One New York State: Urban Policy and Regional Design,' a program that celebrated the 75th anniversary of AIA New York State and brought public officials together with design professionals to define a strategy for making communities more livable. Under his leadership, he has also fostered stronger ties between local chapters and the state component, and has inspired local leaders to achieve greater civic involvement. He truly reflects the spirit of 'Architecture as Public Policy.'"

O'Neal has made "One New York State" the theme of his tenure as president of AIANYS. He has served on the Board of Directors of AIANYS since 2001, most recently as vice president government affairs and chair of the NYS Architects Political Action Committee (NYSAPAC). He has headed various lobbying delegations in Albany and Washington, D.C., throughout the years and has met with the staffs of Senators Charles Schumer and Hillary Clinton as well as with numerous state legislators.

TONA, the full-service Manhattan-based firm founded by O'Neal, provides architecture, interior design, project management and planning services for public and private clients. Its major projects include a series of rehabilitations for Covenant House New York; over 40 large-scale multi-housing developments; fit-outs for major corporations including NBC Universal and Prudential Financial; interior work for such healthcare institutions as Memorial Sloan-Kettering; and new construction and renovations for public schools.
