The Knights established a solid reputation by winning the last three league titles.

But that was before Paraclete Paraclete (pâr`əklēt), in the New Testament, title of the Holy Spirit, often translated as "Comforter" or "Advocate." In First John, Jesus himself is the "Paraclete."  joined the party.

The Spirits, who are new to the league, routed L.A. Baptist 34-14 at Antelope Valley College Antelope Valley College is a comprehensive community college located in Lancaster, California, USA. It is operated by the Antelope Valley Community College District, with a primary service area of 1,945 square miles covering portions of Los Angeles and Kern counties.  Friday night and staked a valid claim to being the team to beat.

And if Paraclete (7-1, 3-0) could have avoided a few ill-advised penalties, it would have been worse for L.A. Baptist (5-3, 1-2).

The Spirits had three touchdowns called back because of holding.

Paraclete (7-1, 3-0) allegedly had a suspect offense. There were no signs of that on Friday when the Spirits racked up 393 yards, well above their season average of 196.

``We got our starting QB back tonight,'' Paraclete Coach Steve Hagerty said. ``When he's in the ballgame, we're a much better team.''

Obviously.

After L.A. Baptist scored on its opening drive, a 4-yard run by quarterback Scott Swenson, the Knights' offense went into hibernation.

``Paraclete had a good plan,'' L.A. Baptist coach Mark Bates Bates   , Katherine Lee 1859-1929.

Between the first and third quarters, Paraclete scored 34 unanswered points.

Paraclete also received a strong ground game from freshman running back Curtis Brown

Brown had 154 yards in 21 carries and scored on a 38-yard sprint in the second quarter.

Penalties prevented Paraclete from extending its lead in the second half. Michael Washington had touchdown runs of 28 and 49 yards wiped out because of holding penalties. The Spirits also squandered squan·der

 a 26-yard run by Breech.

``The only negative thing for us on the evening was the penalties,'' Hagerty said. ``And I'm not going to hold being aggressive against the kids.''

Paraclete had 14 penalties for 125 yards.

Swenson finished as L.A. Baptist's top offensive player. He completed 16 of 23 attempts for 177 yards and one touchdown.

``If we wanted the right to play for the Alpha League championship, we knew it had to go through L.A. Baptist,'' Hagerty said.

This sets up the championship game with Kilpatrick next week.

Fockaert, who finished 8 of 17 for 145 yards and two touchdowns, re-injured his ankle late in the third quarter. Hagerty said he wouldn't know the particulars until today.
