'BROKEBACK,' 'CAPOTE' LEAD GLAAD FILM NOMINEES; 29 TV SHOWS ALSO GET NODS.

Awards season darlings ``Brokeback Mountain'' and ``Capote'' are among the movies that will be vying for outstanding film honors at the 17th annual GLAAD Media Awards The GLAAD Media Awards were created in 1990 by the Gay & Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation to recognize and honor the mainstream media for their fair, accurate and inclusive representations of the LGBT community and the issues that affect their lives. .

The Gay & Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation announced its nominations Monday evening at a press conference in Park City, Utah Park City is a city located in Summit County, Utah, United States. It is one of two major resort towns in Utah, the other being Moab. It is considered to be part of the Wasatch Back and a part of the Salt Lake City metropolitan area. , site of the Sundance Film Festival.

Outstanding-film nominees were divided into two categories with ``Brokeback'' and ``Capote'' competing with ``The Family Stone,'' ``Kiss Kiss Bang Bang'' and ``Rent'' for wide-release honors.

Limited-release contenders are: ``Beautiful Boxer,'' ``Mysterious Skin,'' ``Saving Face,'' ``Walk on Water'' and ``Transamerica'' - the latter already having garnered a Golden Globe award for its star Felicity Huffman.

The awards recognize mainstream media that GLAAD GLAAD Gay & Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation  feels gives fair, accurate and inclusive representations of the lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender community and the issues that affect their lives.

In the television categories, cable networks led the way this year with 16 nominations, while the broadcast networks had 13 nominations overall.

Competing for best drama series are ``Commander in Chief,'' ``The L Word,'' ``Queer as Folk Queer as Folk may refer to:
  • Queer as Folk (UK TV series) (1999-2000), a British television series about a group of gay men
  • Queer as Folk (US TV series) (2000-2005), a North American remake of the British series
,'' ``Six Feet Under'' and ``South of Nowhere.'' Outstanding comedy series nominees are ``Out of Practice,'' ``Shameless'' and ``Will & Grace.''

Series without a regular gay character that received a nomination for outstanding individual episode were ``Law & Order,'' ``Cold Case,'' ``My Name Is Earl My Name Is Earl is an Emmy Award-winning American sitcom created by Greg Garcia. It is produced by 20th Century Fox Television. It is currently in its third season and is broadcast on the NBC television network Thursdays at 8:00 PM Eastern time. ,'' ``What I Like About You'' and ``Without a Trace.''

Outstanding reality show nominees are ``The Amazing Race 7,'' ``America's Next Top Model “ANTM” redirects here. For the Australian series, see Australia's Next Top Model.

Other categories include outstanding daily drama, outstanding documentary, outstanding talk-show episode, outstanding TV journalism and several categories for print journalists. Music artists, local theater, advertising and Spanish-language programs are also being recognized.

``Fair, accurate and inclusive media images have incredible cultural power,'' said GLAAD president Neil G. Giuliano. ``This year's GLAAD Media Awards nominees are changing the world, and it's our privilege to honor them.''

The GLAAD Media Awards ceremonies will be held in New York on March 27 and in Los Angeles on April 8 at the Kodak Theatre. There will also be award ceremonies in Miami on May 25 and in San Francisco on June 10.
