'BIG FISH' WHOPPER IN TICKET SALES FILM HOOKS CROWN FROM 'KING'.

Byline: Greg Hernandez Staff Writer

In a photo finish Sunday, the Tim Burton drama ``Big Fish'' appeared to have knocked ``The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King'' from its box office throne after a heady head·y

Sony Pictures Entertainment estimated Sunday that ``Fish'' grossed $14.5 million over the weekend. New Line Cinema estimated that ``King'' grossed $14.1 million. The numbers and rankings could change when final box office figures are released today.

``It's a testament to the strength of 'Lord of the Rings' that in its fourth weekend, it's still in contention for No. 1,'' observed box office analyst Paul Dergarabedian, president of Exhibitor Relations Co.

Even if it lost its box office crown, it was still a historic weekend for ``King,'' which on Friday became the second-fastest movie to pass the $300 million mark in domestic grosses. The third chapter in the fantasy trilogy A company founded in 1979 by Gene Amdahl to commercialize wafer scale integration and build supercomputers. It raised a quarter of a billion dollars, the largest startup funding in history, but could not create its 2.5" superchip.  took just 24 days to reach the impressive milestone, only two days slower than all-time leader ``Spider-Man.''

``Obviously, we are thrilled that it passed $300 million,'' said David Tuckerman, New Line's president of theatrical distribution. ``Each ('Rings') picture has performed better than the last.''

For Sony, the solid performance for ``Fish'' was a triumph since it is a unique movie considered difficult to categorize cat·e·go·rize

or market. Starting as a limited release last month it was successful in creating strong word of mouth by the time the film expanded into more than 2,400 locations this weekend.

``Everyone at the studio loved this movie,'' said Rory Bruer, Sony's president of domestic distribution. ``It required some special care and going slow. It certainly seems to have worked for us with audiences embracing the film. Tim Burton delivered such a visually stunning movie with a really strong emotional core.''

Meanwhile, the family comedy ``Cheaper by the Dozen'' from 20th Century Fox has proven to be a bona fide [Latin, In good faith.] Honest; genuine; actual; authentic; acting without the intention of defrauding.
