O'Neill, who offered Barry a new deal, was hoping he would at least see out the final year of his contract.

He said: "It would have been fantastic if Barry had stayed and I was disappointed to lose him. He wanted to go and he felt Manchester City was the right stage so I won't argue.

"I worked with him for three years and he hardly missed a game."
