'An unfortunate thing'.

Patty Wente, director and general manager of KWMU, St. Louis' public radio station, was charged with DUI in Sarasota County, Fla., on Nov. 17. She was held overnight but had her bond waived. Sgt. Connor Cardwell of the Florida Highway Patrol stopped Wente, who was alone in a rental car, near Venice because of her "driving pattern," he said. A breath test showed she was over the legal limit for alcohol.

"She was very cooperative," Cardwell said.

Wente, 51, told SJR she was in Florida to help her parents deal with flood conditions and went to a restaurant where she had two glasses of wine. She said she was fiddling with a GPS system near the windshield when the trooper spotted her.

"My attorney is dealing with it ... it's an unfortunate thing that happened," she said. Wente has managed KWMU since 1989.
