'After 18 years... we're an overnight success' David Powell talks to Elbow's Pete Turner ahead of their North Wales date.


ELBOW drummer Pete Turner did some serious celebrating after the band scooped their latest accolade at the South Bank Show awards in London. The sensitive Manchester band were named winners of the pop award, following on for their Nationwide Mercury prize, for their album The Seldom Seen Seldom Seen was a horse that competed at the highest levels of dressage with his rider, Lendon Gray.

Pete said: "The South Bank Show ceremony was really in the afternoon. I started drinking at about noon. We beat Laura Marling who had been up for a Mercury award too (last year).

"We feel a bit guilty."

The ceremony was packed with famous names from across the celebrity world - from Ronnie Wood to Ronnie Corbett.

He said: "I grew up with the Two Ronnies TV show. I used to love 'em. And later I was sat next to (artist) Tracey Emin and Ronnie Wood came up and talked to her.

But I couldn't really say I had a chat with him."

Elbow are Pete, Guy Garvey, Craig Potter, Mark Potter, Richard Jupp.

And fans and music industry insiders welcomed Elbow's Mercury award success last year - after an 18-year, multi-album career.

Pete says: "I don't know if it was overdue. We tend to crack on to put on; as, to crack on more sail, or more steam.

 regardless of what people think about us. But it's raised our profile a lot and the album's selling really well.

It's like an overnight success after 18 years. We're all 34 and 35 now and I reckon if it happened to you when you were 19 it could really s**** you up."

Their lead single Grounds For Divorce The Grounds for divorce are set regulations in each state that specify under what circumstances can one party be granted a divorce. Elbow are touring soon and visit Llandudno next month. First, though, they're off to work on a new CD on the Isle of Mull The Isle of Mull (or simply Mull; Muile in Scottish Gaelic) is the second largest island of the Inner Hebrides, off the west coast of Scotland in the council area of Argyll and Bute.  in Scotland.

Pete, who lives in Chorlton, Manchester, says: "We're looking forward to coming to North Wales.

"We want to make hay while the sun shines. We've already got the bare bones of 15 tunes we were writing on our last tour."
