'ANGELS' FALLS FROM GRACE AT THEATERS HYPED SEQUEL HITS TURBULENCE.

Byline: Greg Hernandez Staff Writer

A June gloom hovered over multiplexes this weekend as ``Charlie's Angels: Full Throttle'' bowed to a less-than-expected $38 million.

Meanwhile, ``The Hulk'' saw its ticket sales drop by a devastating dev·as·tate

Overall movie attendance dropped for the third weekend in a row.

But the movie industry heads into the Fourth of July Fourth of July, Independence Day, or July Fourth, U.S. holiday, commemorating the adoption of the Declaration of Independence. Celebration of it began during the American Revolution.  weekend with high hopes for two other sequels: ``Terminator (1) A character that ends a string of alphanumeric characters.

(2) A hardware component that is connected to the last peripheral device in a series or the last node in a network.
3: Rise of the Machines'' and ``Legally Blonde 2: Red, White & Blonde.''

``It's been a summer of fits and starts,'' said Paul Dergarabedian, president of box-office tracker Exhibitor Relations Co. ``We are trying to somehow get out of a deficit situation compared to last year and really need Fourth of July to get us out of this slump that we're in.''

The ``Angels'' sequel opened with numbers just below the $40.1 million earned by the original film when it opened in November 2001. The original went on to earn $125 million domestically.

Given the massive publicity surrounding the release of the new film - it stars Drew Barrymore, Cameron Diaz and Lucy Lui and features a much-hyped movie comeback for Demi Moore Demi Kutcher (born Demetria Gene Guynes on November 11, 1962) is an American actress. For most of her career, she has been known as Demi Moore, using the surname of her first husband, singer-songwriter Freddy Moore.  - expectations were higher for the opening weekend of the Sony Pictures Entertainment release.

``It will probably come out equal or above what the first one did,'' said Jeff Blake Jeff Bertrand Coleman Blake (born December 4, 1970 in Daytona Beach, Florida) is a retired American football quarterback who played in the NFL. Although he finished his career with the Chicago Bears, he was formerly a quarterback for the New York Jets, Cincinnati Bengals, New , vice chairman of Sony Pictures Entertainment. ``This is kind of a unique franchise. It's female-driven, and you have to take it on its own terms.''

Still, Dergarabedian said ``Angels'' managed to finish right in line with other successful female action films, the biggest of which was the $47 million opening for ``Lara Croft CROFT, obsolete. A little close adjoining to a dwelling-house, and enclosed for pasture or arable, or any particular use. Jacob's Law Dict. : Tomb Raider'' two summers ago.

For Universal Pictures, the summer has been a strong one, with such hits as ``Bruce Almighty'' and ``2 Fast 2 Furious.'' But the precipitous drop by ``Hulk'' signaled the most dramatic audience rejection yet of a movie adaptation of a Marvel Comics property.

``Hulk'' earned an estimated $18.4 million over the weekend, a woeful woe·ful also wo·ful

``We are very disappointed, obviously,'' said Nikki Rocco, Universal's president of distribution. ``We were very, very anxious to make this film and do something that hadn't been done. We are very proud of this film and when all is said and done, it will fare out fine.''

While the 70 percent drop for ``Hulk'' was somewhat catastrophic, the film did manage to cross the $100 million mark on Sunday, becoming the 10th 2003 release to reach that milestone.
