The Los Angeles critics' choice of ``American Splendor'' for best picture matches the recent opinion of the National Society of Film Critics.

In December, the nation's third major film critics group, the New York New York, state, United States

Film Critics Circle, chose ``Lord of the Rings: Return of the King'' for best picture.

The Los Angeles critics organization, usually the first major group to vote on year-end awards, is the last to do so this season. The organization decided to cancel its 2003 voting after the Motion Picture Association of America tried to ban the distribution of home video screeners to movie awards-voting groups last year.

A federal judge later struck down the ban, which prompted LAFCA LAFCA Los Angeles Film Critics Association  to reinstate its awards. Those decisions came too late for the group to vote when it traditionally does, on the second Saturday in December.

After several weeks of trying to accommodate as many members' holiday schedules as feasible, the Wednesday voting date was agreed upon.
