``She knows about busing; she knows a lot about special education, because that was her expertise when she was a secretary here,'' said Kathy Mafnas, secretary to the superintendent. ``She understood all of the state mandates. She made sure the district stayed in compliance.''

Foster and incumbent Janette Crawford were appointed to the Eastside Union School District board after no one else filed to run for the two seats up in the November election.

She was sworn in at the Dec. 8 meeting.

``It was fine,'' Foster said. ``I was nervous, of course. It was very good.''

Foster said she wanted to be on the board to serve the students.

``I worked for them for 30 years; all four of my children went through the district,'' Foster said. ``I was very involved when the children were young. My heart's there, and I care about children. That's the bottom line. I ran for the children's sake.''

Foster moved to Lancaster from Arizona in 1966 after her husband took a job as a lineman Lineman or linesman may refer to:

She started volunteering in 1966 when there was one school, Eastside Elementary School elementary school: see school. , with 700 students in kindergarten kindergarten [Ger.,=garden of children], system of preschool education. Friedrich Froebel designed (1837) the kindergarten to provide an educational situation less formal than that of the elementary school but one in which children's creative play instincts would be  through eighth grade.

Three years later, she began working as a noontime supervisor, followed by stints as a bus driver, aide and school secretary.

In 1990, as Eastside's enrollment grew with the construction of housing tracts in east Lancaster, she moved to the district office to become an executive secretary.

Foster said she had no particular favorite job. ``I enjoyed them all,'' she said.

``Her heart is with Eastside, trust me,'' Superintendent Colleen col·leen

``We got to spend two weeks together in the boiler room,'' Mafnas said. ``She's a wonderful person, very generous. She loves kids. She was active in sports activities. She was always there for her kids.''
