experts by grossing a mighty $85.7 million during its opening Memorial Day weekend and has continued with solid ticket sales through the week. The film earned a solid $4.5 million Thursday, enough to send it over the $100 million mark even before its second weekend in theaters.

Gray believes ``Almighty,'' which also stars Morgan Freeman Freeman can mean:
  • An individual not tied to land under the Medieval feudal system, unlike a villein or serf
  • A person who has been awarded Freedom of the City or "Freedom of the Company" in a Livery Company

``It has the momentum and people like it,'' he said.

Paul Dergarabedian, president of the box office tracking firm Exhibitor Relations Co., said while ``Almighty'' has surpassed all expectations, it is yet another example of how well comedies have done this year at the box office. ``Anger Management,'' ``Bringing Down the House'' and ``How to Lose a Guy in Ten Days'' are among the other $100 million grossers released this year.

``This is the year that comedies are ruling the Earth,'' Dergarabedian said. ``They have been the genre of choice this year so it would make sense that Jim Carrey in a broad comedy would be able to cross the $100 million mark so quickly.''
