'99 AIR SHOW STARTS ENGINES AT VAN NUYS.

Planes twisting through the sky in four aerobatic performances over Van Nuys Airport Van Nuys Airport (IATA: VNY, ICAO: KVNY, FAA LID: VNY) is a public airport located in Van Nuys, California in the San Fernando Valley, within the Los Angeles city limits.  are among the highlights of this weekend's free Aviation Expo '99, which could draw as many as 300,000 aviation buffs on Saturday and Sunday, organizers said.

 - the agency that operates city-owned airports - the annual show traditionally is known for its static displays of military and vintage aircraft, event coordinator Stacy Geere said.

About 70 planes will be on display during the two-day event.

``We're especially excited to have the most impressive lineup of aerobatic performers in our show's history,'' Geere said.

 Parachute Team will be jumping in the morning and afternoon both Saturday and Sunday.

The line-up includes champion aerobats Sean D. Tucker and Wayne Handley. The aerobatic grand finale for both days will feature three headliners performing simultaneous maneuvers.

The aerobatic shows will run from 10:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. and again from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday and Sunday, Geere said.

Among the aircraft coming to the airport from military bases as far away as Louisiana and Wisconsin are a B-1 bomber, a B-52 bomber, F-14 Tomcats, F-15 Strike Eagles and A-10 Warthogs. An AB Harrier harrier, breed of dog

Aviation Expo is the city's largest free family event, and it is done at no cost to taxpayers, Geere said.

City Councilman Joel Wachs Joel Wachs served for several terms as Los Angeles City Councilman for the 2nd district. He was first elected by defeating incumbent James B. Potter.

, the event's grand marshal Grand Marshal is a ceremonial, military, or political office of very high rank. The term has its origins with the word "Marshal" with the first usage of the term "Grand Marshal" as a ceremonial title for certain religious orders. , will preside over opening ceremonies Saturday at 10 a.m. He will present an award to 93-year-old Bobbie Trout, who is celebrating the 70th anniversary of her first record-setting endurance flight, launched from Van Nuys Airport. She will sign autographs both days of the expo.

Now living in Carlsbad, Trout said when she began flying at age 21, ``people thought we were nuts.'' But she loved it and went on to set many records, including one as the first woman pilot to fly all night.

She stopped flying just after World War II to run defense businesses but still remembers her flying days. ``When it gets in your blood, it's like dope,'' Trout said.

Aviation Expo '99 will run 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday and Sunday. The pedestrian entrance is at 8030 Balboa Blvd. Handicapped parking is at 8050 Balboa Blvd.

Free parking is available in remote parking lots, with no fee for the shuttles taking visitors back and forth. The four lots are located at the following sites:

The 36th annual Van Nuys air show runs Saturday and Sunday, with sneak previews of landings and practice flights today. There is no parking at the airport; instead, park at one of the following sites and ride a free shuttle. Show organizers advise visitors to prepare for hot conditions by wearing loose clothes, hats and sunscreen sunscreen /sun·screen/ (-skren) a substance applied to the skin to protect it from the effects of the sun's rays.
