'97 BALKS BRING OUT '98 BUCKS.

It was just about this time last year that Jeff Weaver This article is about Major League Baseball player Jeffrey Weaver. For other people named Jeff Weaver, see Jeff Weaver (disambiguation).

and Seth Etherton were deciding whether or not to leave school early and play professional baseball. After the first round of Major League Baseball's amateur draft Monday, both were glad they stuck around.

Weaver, the former Simi Valley High right-hander who led the nation in strikeouts at Fresno State in 1997, was selected with the 14th overall pick by the Detroit Tigers, a spot that could solidify the hard-throwing All-American a seven-figure signing bonus.

``It was a tough decision last year,'' said Weaver, who was 10-4 with a 2.98 ERA and 156 strikeouts for the Bulldogs this season. ``But you have to know deep down you have the ability and desire to better yourself.''

Etherton, who saw both his velocity and stock rise markedly after turning down a St. Louis Cardinals For the National Football League team that played in St. Louis from 1960 to 1987, see .

offer last season, went surprisingly high at No. 18 overall to the Angels. Edison Field is 25 minutes from the All-American's Dana Point home.

``I was very shocked,'' said Etherton, the Pacific-10 Conference' all-time strikeout leader who is 11-3 with a 2.77 ERA with the Trojans - still alive in the College World Series. ``It's been a lifelong dream to stay home and play for the Angels. I couldn't have wished for anything more.''

The two right-handers' good fortune were highlights in an interesting first day of the draft, considered deep this season by most experts.

outfielder Eric Valent, thought to be a first-round choice of either the Dodgers, Yankees or Mariners, fell to the Phillies at No. 42 pick in a supplemental round.

``I had a feeling I'd go higher,'' said Valent, who had 30 home runs this season to break the all-time Pac-10 record. ``(The Phillies) said they couldn't believe they got me.''

Barry Zito, the gifted left-hander who left UC Santa Barbara last season for Pierce College, was taken in the third round (83rd overall) by Texas, one of several local pitchers coveted cov·et

The top local high school player taken was Newbury Park outfielder Barry Tolli, a .386 hitter with power taken by Detroit in the eighth round. Monroe High teammates Victor Hall (12th round, Arizona) and John Ennis (14th round, Atlanta) followed. Thousand Oaks High left-hander Ryan Earl was a 22nd-round pick of the Tigers.

Surprisingly, highly regarded players like Highland's Traviss Hodge and El Camino Real's Woody Cliffords went undrafted through the first 25 rounds. The final 25 rounds will be completed today.
