'500 killed' by Devil typhoon; TAIWAN.


MORE than 500 people are feared dead in Taiwan's "Devil" typhoon typhoon: see hurricane. , it was claimed yesterday.

An estimated 390 are believed to have been buried alive by a mudslide in one village alone.

Typhoon Morakot has dumped more than 80 inches of rain on the island.

More than 15,400 have already been ferried to safety but rescuers were yesterday struggling to save 1,900 stranded in remote villages.

Taiwanese President Ma Ying-jeou Ma Ying-Jeou (Traditional Chinese: 馬英九; Simplified Chinese: 马英九  said Morakot has inflicted the worst damage on the island in 50 years.
