BETHLEHEM, Pa.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Oct. 4, 2000

iDomains, Inc., www.idomains.com, a Bethlehem Pennsylvania-based Internet company announced today that it has filed with the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers See ICANN.

(body, networking) Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers - (ICANN) The non-profit corporation that was formed to assume responsibility for IP address allocation, protocol parameter assignment, domain name system management, and root server system
(ICANN (Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers, www.icann.org) A non-profit, international association founded in 1998 and incorporated in the U.S. It is the successor to IANA (Internet Assigned Numbers Authority), which manages Internet addresses, domain names and the huge number ) an application to operate a registry for an innovative new restricted top level domain targeted at the global business community.

iDomains proposes to offer domain name registry A domain name registry, also called Network Information Centre (NIC), is part of the Domain Name System (DNS) of the Internet which converts domain names to IP addresses.  services under the top-level domain (networking) top-level domain - The last and most significant component of an Internet fully qualified domain name, the part after the last ".". For example, host wombat.doc.ic.ac.uk is in top-level domain "uk" (for United Kingdom).  "BIZ".

Hal Lubsen, President of iDomains, stated "We are very excited to make this proposal and feel that '.BIZ' will provide an excellent opportunity for businesses throughout the world to be able to operate in their own clearly defined name space."

Lubsen noted several unique features of the iDomains proposal. The first is a Dual Naming Dual naming is a policy for the naming of geographical landmarks, in which an official name is adopted that combines two previous names. Usually, the context is a conflict over which of the two previous names is most appropriate.  System, which will reserve select second level domains. Although other registries have proposed a similar technique in the past, the iDomain concept is unique in that it allows users to concurrently use both the second and third level domain names.

For example, a user would be able to register and use the second-level domain In the Domain Name System (DNS) hierarchy, a second-level domain (SLD) is a domain that is directly below a top-level domain (TLD). For example, in wikipedia.org, wikipedia is the second-level domain of the .org TLD.  MY-COMPANY.BIZ while simultaneously using the third-level domains MY-COMPANY.UK.BIZ. The geographic feature that will replicate the existing country code system is important for businesses that are seeking to market their goods and services In economics, economic output is divided into physical goods and intangible services. Consumption of goods and services is assumed to produce utility (unless the "good" is a "bad"). It is often used when referring to a Goods and Services Tax.  on both a global basis while retaining the intimacy at a local or special interest level.

One of the many other unique features in the .BIZ proposal is the creation of a Business Policy Advisory Board with global representation to spur e-commerce initiatives. Looking toward the future, iDomains envisions the adoption of a voluntary Code of Conduct by .BIZ registrants to address such issues as security, consumer privacy, etc. The goal of such pro-active measures on behalf of a registry and its registrants is to create a brand awareness that will increase both merchant and consumer confidence.

Lubsen noted that "Although nobody questions the success of .COM, it unfortunately has become everything to everybody. The genesis behind .BIZ was the creation of a global marketplace to facilitate business activity with increased efficiency and security."

Under the terms of the charter proposal submitted to ICANN, iDomains will restrict domain name registrations to qualifying businesses and employ various back-end data integrity check to minimize cyber-squatters and charter violations.
