on Monday demanded immediate sacking of telecom minister A. Raja A. Raja (born 10 May, 1963) is a member of the 14th Lok Sabha of India. He represents the Perambalur constituency of Tamil Nadu and is a member of the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) political party.  for his alleged role in the " biggest scam in independent India". Leader of opposition in the Rajya Sabha The Rajya Sabha (meaning the "Council of States") is the upper house of the Parliament of India. Membership is limited to 250 members, 12 of whom are chosen by the President of India for their expertise in specific fields of art, literature, science, and social services.  Arun Jaitley Arun Jaitley (born December 28, 1952), or Jaitly, is an Indian politician and has served as a minister for commerce, industry, law and justice of the Union Government of India.

He was born in New Delhi. He did his schooling at St.
also questioned the propriety of Prime Minister Manmohan Singh's public defence of the minister.

He said the corruption, amounting to Rs 60,000 crore n. 1. Ten millions; as, a crore of rupees (which is nearly $5,000,000) s>.

, was not possible without " involvement from the top". " Crucial decisions were taken by the minister himselfC* The country was robbed off a huge amount.

The PM's statement, choosing to revel on the minister's innocence, is unfortunate," Jaitley said.

He said the scam unravelled in 2007 when applications for issuing telecom licenses for 2G spectrum were invited setting October 1, 2007 as the deadline.

" An unofficial cut- off date i. e. September 25, 2007, was created. The favourites, who were inexperienced operators, were advised to apply before September 25. Applications received between September 25 and October 1 were rejected, Jaitley alleged.

The next allegation, Jaitley said, related to the amount charged for the licences. He said the minister " erroneously" cited a Telecom Regulatory Authority Noun 1. regulatory authority - a governmental agency that regulates businesses in the public interest

of India ( Trai) recommendation to charge Rs 1,650 crore for the licences.

" The minister's contention is wrong. Trai said the entry fee, determined in 2001, was not realistic.

Trai wanted the fee to be re- assessed through a market mechanism," he said.

The Congress shifted its stand by distancing itself from the case. Spokesperson Shakeel Ahmed said: " The Congress is for transparency and accountability.

But the minister's name has not surfaced in the scam." Jaitley calculated the loss to the exchequer to be around Rs 60,000 crore.

" The allotees of the licences did not operate the service. They availed of the 74 per cent Foreign Direct Investment policy and found buyers from the international market.

The shell companies were overnight valued at over $ 2billion ( over Rs 9,000 crore). A large chunk of the equity was sold by at least three licencees to overseas partners for about Rs 6,000 crore. For the nine licences, the net evaluation exceeds Rs 60,000 crore," Jaitley said.
