May 17 Tribute Honoring Entertainment Industry Icon, Milton Berle Milton Berle (July 12, 1908 - March 27, 2002) was an Emmy-winning American comedian who was born Milton Berlinger. As the manic host of NBC's Texaco Star Theater (1948-1955), he was the first major star of television. Members of The Friars Club of California will gather for a memorial tribute honoring one of the Club's most respected founders and adored members -- Milton Berle, "the man who put television on the map." Affectionately referred to as "Uncle Miltie," Berle and his life will be celebrated at the Friars Club on May 17, 2002 starting at 6:30 p.m. The Club is located at 9900 Santa Monica Santa Monica (săn`tə mŏn`ĭkə), city (1990 pop. 86,905), Los Angeles co., S Calif., on Santa Monica Bay; inc. 1886. Larry King, talk show host and Friars Club Abbott, will serve as master of ceremonies. King will be joined on the dais with Phyllis Diller, Red Buttons, Norm Crosby, Connie Stevens, Monty Hall and Lainie Kazan, among others. Collectively, these entertainers will present both tributes and performances in honor of their dear friend. Berle, star of vaudeville, motion pictures, television and radio, was in show business for more than 80 years. One of his first steps toward stardom was as the "Buster Brown Boy" in 1913. His screen debut was with Charlie Chaplin in "Tillie's Punctured Romance." He appeared in countless television programs, several of which he launched, including "Texaco Star Theater Texaco Star Theater, a comedy-variety show (radio, 1940-48; television, 1948-56), was one of the first hugely successful examples of U.S. television broadcasting. Remembered best as the show that made a household name and "Mr. ," "Berle Buick Show," "Jackpot Bowling" and "Kraft Music Hall The Kraft Music Hall was a major NBC radio variety program, featuring top show business entertainers, in a 16-year span from 1933 to 1949. Kraft Foods was the first advertiser to sponsor a two-hour radio program, in an era when many radio programs were only 15 minutes long ." During his career, Berle worked with Lucille Ball and Desi Arnaz, Mary Pickford, Douglas Fairbanks, Sr., Marion Davies and numerous other Hollywood legends. He also appeared in "Mod Squad," "Ironside," "The Defenders" and "Mannix." He helped shape the popularity of television as an entertainment medium, by reputedly re·put·ed adj. The Academy of Television Arts and Sciences honored Berle with a plaque stating, with no equivocation, that Berle was to be known thereafter as "Mr. Television."
