''Bright Idea'' Launches Nationwide Campaign to Fight Global Warming; Teacher, Students Celebrate Efforts to Give Every Student in America an Energy-Efficient Light Bulb.

NORTH BABYLON, N.Y. -- Hundreds of students, led by the vision of eighth-grade science teacher Kenny Luna, will join together to officially kick-off "Mr. Luna's Bright Idea", a nationwide campaign promoting energy efficiency through the simple task of changing a light bulb. The goal of the initiative is to fight global warming by giving every student in America a compact fluorescent light bulb (CFL), which uses as much as 75 percent less energy than standard incandescent light bulbs while providing the same light levels. The campaign will launch with a special event, including a ceremonial lighting by elementary students, live music, and other entertainment acts, on Thursday, March 30 from 6:00 - 8:30 p.m. at North Babylon High School in North Babylon, NY.

"Mr. Luna's Bright Idea" is gaining momentum with the aid of The Home Depot and TCP, Inc., the Cleveland, Ohio-based lighting manufacturer of the most energy efficient CFLs in the country. The two companies, which strongly support energy efficiency in their daily business practices, have jointly donated 5,500 CFLs to the campaign.

"We are so grateful for the overwhelming generosity of The Home Depot and TCP in giving us thousands of CFLs that will immediately go into the hands of students in the North Babylon School District," said Kenny Luna, 8th Grade Science Teacher, Robert Moses Middle School in North Babylon, NY. "Both companies share our belief that every American can take action now to help protect our environment for future generations."

Mr. Luna is also challenging Oprah Winfrey to offer her support of the initiative. In October, The Oprah Winfrey Show addressed the topic of global warming in an interview with actor-environmentalist Leonardo DiCaprio and scientist Michael Oppenheimer. The show also included a segment with Laurie David, environmental activist and wife of Seinfeld co-creator Larry David, which focused on energy efficient lighting, featuring TCP's compact fluorescent light bulbs. The show sparked Mr. Luna's idea. He and his students have since contacted Ms. Winfrey to ask for her help in promoting the campaign nationwide.

Students in the North Babylon School District have been actively involved in raising money through a series of fundraising events in support of "Mr. Luna's Bright Idea". Their efforts have collected as much as $3,000 to help fund the continuation of the program.

"If every student in America changed one light bulb to a CFL, it would add up to a savings of more than $2 billion in energy costs," stated Mr. Luna. "We are empowering our students to 'stand up' and make a difference. Now, we must all follow the youth of America in pledging to fight global warming one light bulb at a time."
