`X-FILES' GURU CARTER MAY SIGN SOON FOR 2 MORE YEARS.

``X-Files'' creator/producer Chris Carter Chris Carter may refer to:

  • Chris Carter (actor/screenwriter), Canadian television screenwriter and actor
has yet to conclude negotiations that would commit him to the popular Fox drama for an additional two years. But, says Carter, ``Everybody seems to be talking the same language.''

No matter how it goes, he says he won't be rushing to do a sequel to the big-screen ``X-Files.''

He's obviously pleased with the fact that the feature was No. 1 at the box office with a $31 million take during its opening last weekend. But he wants to wait and see how sturdy its legs will prove. ``I'm never one to count my chickens before they hatch. It's too early to predict anything,'' he says.

On cue

``Supernova'' has Phillips playing an astronaut, but he tells us he doesn't get to wear a typical space suit. ``We have to wear, well, I guess you could call them space pajamas pajamas

Phillips also happens to have authored the play.

Also at the Rack 'n' Roll event was Kathy Najimy - who has mixed feelings about returning to her dual TV duties as the assistant on ``Veronica's Closet'' and a voice on ``King of the Hill'' in August. ``When both shows start up, it gets a little harried taking care of my 1-1/2-year-old baby at the same time.'' How does she keep up the juggling? ``I just look at the bills. That's my inspiration,'' she says.

The big-screen scene

``It takes three hours, and it's pretty close to torture,'' says Seth Green of the process he goes through each day to become a zombie A computer that has been covertly taken over in order to perform some nefarious task. Green, who'll return to ``Buffy, the Vampire Slayer'' next season and is currently on screen in ``Can't Hardly Wait,'' wraps ``Idle Hands'' in a couple of weeks. He says he'll take a much-needed break before ``Buffy'' starts shooting July 20. ``I've been working pretty nonstop the last year and a half,'' says Green, who's got three films in the can, ``Enemy of the State,'' ``Stonebrook'' and ``Attic Expeditions.''

The name's the thing

At one time, Lynn Redgrave talked about changing her last name to Redgrave-Clark to distance herself from the controversial political image of her sister, Vanessa. Well, she's finally done it, but only because, she says, after 31 years of marriage to John Clark, she felt it was more than time to use his name. At least in her personal life. She'll still go by Redgrave professionally. Redgrave, who stars in Showtime's upcoming ``Rude Awakening'' series, reveals she made the name change when she became an American citizen this year. ``I felt it was time for a new beginning, a new identity.'' She has lived in America for many years, but, she says, ``I took a long time to decide about changing my citizenship.'' What did it? ``I really wanted to vote.''
