``(It) would call attention to the outstanding contributions by one of our most distinguished residents and would at the same time recognize the importance of the entertainment industry to the region's and nation's economy,'' Antonovich told fellow supervisors Tuesday as he introduced his proposal.

Antonovich's motion calls on his colleagues to ask Los Angeles Mayor Richard Riordan, the L.A. City Council and the Airport Commission to consider his idea. The supervisors are slated to vote on his motion next Tuesday.

While there is precedent for naming airports after high-profile figures, airport officials said they were hesitant to give up a name that has international recognition.

``There is a lot of equity and name recognition for the call letters LAX around the world,'' said Nancy Castles, spokeswoman for Los Angeles International Airport “LAX” redirects here. For other uses, see LAX (disambiguation).

Riordan had no official comment, but one source close to the mayor said the idea wouldn't fly with him. ``It's an idea whose time has not come,'' the source said.

Castles said honoring Stewart was suggested when the airport was considering names for the international terminal, but the city ended up going with former Los Angeles Mayor Tom Bradley. Other contenders were pilots Chuck Yeager and James Doolittle.

William Schoneberger, the organizer of a Dec. 3 aviation gala at the Proud Bird Restaurant to honor Stewart, said he likes the idea of honoring the late actor.

But even the longtime Stewart fan questioned the wisdom of giving up an internationally known name. A compromise might be to rename the field after Stewart or maybe one of several important aviation pioneers.

``As a designation you certainly wouldn't want to lose LAX,'' he said. ``You say LAX worldwide you know exactly what they mean.''
