`The Mummy Returns', Universal Pictures long awaited sequel to the international smash `The Mummy' hit theaters nationwide Friday. That this blockbuster hit the screens this weekend makes no one happier than Academy Award nominated sound designer Leslie Shatz. Mixed at Todd-AO Studios in Los Angeles, Shatz chose a pair of Euphonix S-5 high-resolution digital audio consoles to make this daunting project a reality. "My first impression has to do with the flexibility of the layout of the System 5," says Leslie. "We were inputting over 350 digital channels to our mix, which includes dialogue, music effects and fix machines. With such a great number of sources, ease of access to each channel and each group is essential. The spill function of the Euphonix allowed me to call to the board each premix group and its associated fades with at most, 2 key strokes."
