`TOY,' `MILE' GIVE HANKS TOP 2 SPOTS.

ruled at the nation's multiplexes as ``Toy Story 2'' and ``The Green Mile'' dominated a moderate weekend, with the animated sequel edging the prison drama with an estimated $18.7 million at 3,238 theaters during the Friday-Sunday period, studio sources said Sunday.

``Toy Story 2,'' which fell only 32 percent from the previous weekend, has taken in an impressive $140.8 million overall as it topped the box office for three consecutive weekends. With Hanks reprising his role as the voice of Woody, the sequel looks likely to become the 29th member of the $200 million club by the end of the year.

Disney distribution chief Chuck Viane said ``Toy Story 2'' is continuing to draw well among all demographics. ``We are seeing strong numbers for the 9 p.m. and 10 p.m. shows, which means it's playing very well to adults,'' he added. ``We think some of its best days are ahead of it around Christmas week.''

.' opening of ``The Green Mile,'' with Hanks portraying a prison guard on Death Row during the 1930s, finished a close second with $18.6 million at 2,875 theaters.

Industry observers said the returns were respectable, given its three-hour running time and ultraserious subject matter.

With a difference of under 1 percent between the top two films, it remains quite possible for ``The Green Mile'' to emerge as the weekend winner today when final numbers for the Friday-Sunday period are released.

``It's no surprise that `Toy Story 2' continues to perform well, but the numbers for `The Green Mile' are a tribute to the pulling power Pulling Power is a regional motoring programme shown only in the Central Television region on ITV1 since 1996. However it has been shown on the ITV1 network on a series trial basis and also as a filler programme at times.  of Tom Hanks,'' said longtime tracker Arthur Rockwell. ``Serious pictures don't always have a wide audience so I'd also say this has been well-marketed by Warner Bros.''

Warner distribution chief Dan Fellman said moviegoers polled after seeing ``The Green Mile'' had given it outstanding scores with 97 percent saying they would recommend it. ``These are the best exit polls we've ever had,'' he declared. ``It really is the people's choice.''

Robert Bucksbaum, president of the Reel Source tracking service, said ``The Green Mile'' should perform well through the holiday season, particularly given its status as a leading Academy Awards candidate and the strong word-of-mouth among moviegoers.

``We're about 10 days away from the period of heavy moviegoing,'' he added, noting ``The Green Mile'' could take in as much as $145 million by the end of its run.

``Deuce,'' produced by Adam Sandler's Happy Madison label, is certain to be a moneymaker with a reported price tag of only $15 million.

The top three films kept the box office healthy with $50 million of the $80 million total, about matching last weekend's total while topping the same weekend last year by 8 percent. Total domestic gross for 1999 has already gone past the $6.93 billion total for 1998 and is on track to finish close to $7.5 billion.
