`TODAY' IS THE FIRST DAY OF THE REST OF THEIR LIFE.

Byline: Valerie Kuklenski Staff Writer

Jason Waggoner says he didn't really expect anything would come of his fiancee's suggestion that they enter the seventh annual ``Today'' wedding competition.

They produced a video biography and filled out the lengthy application, and then the bride-to-be chased a FedEx driver to make sure the package made it to New York by the deadline.

``We sent this in, and I thought that was the last of this little project,'' Waggoner, 37, recalled. ``The next day, the phone rang and it was the `Today' show. I thought it was a joke.''

Rings, gown, cake ...

In a series of challenges, they prevailed over six other couples and were chosen on Sept. 20 to have a wedding planned and executed by ``Today,'' with viewer votes deciding everything from the gown and the rings to the cake and the bride's hairdo.

`` `Today' Throws a Wedding'' has eased more than just the financial burden of such an elegant affair.

``We were having trouble getting things going, so I'm actually grateful it happened,'' Waggoner said, noting they had settled on an Oct. 13 wedding date but were still undecided about the location.

``Molly and I are not spring chickens anymore, so to put off our wedding another year, and starting our family, is not what we wanted to do.''
