Many stores stayed open until 2 a.m., then encountered more buyers when they reopened. Haynie said her store was selling 10 copies an hour and had already asked the studio to restock re·stock

Preliminary figures indicate ``Titanic'' - with a worldwide box office topping $1.8 billion - should become the top live-action video ever in the U.S. market, topping the 17 million units sold of ``Jurassic Park'' and ``Independence Day.'' Paramount Studios shipped more than 20 million copies; Video Store magazine, citing an unnamed distributor, reported recently that the total topped 23 million.

Blockbuster announced it had pre-sold 1 million copies at $24.99, while Best Buy sold 50,000 copies between midnight and 2 a.m., when its stores closed. To stock its 289 stores, Best Buy bought enough copies to fill 25 53-foot-long trucks, said spokeswoman Laurie Bauer.

``We had people lining up as early as 9:15 last night, and some of our stores had several hundred people,'' Bauer said.

Paramount spokeswoman Dorrit Ragosine reported no problems with stores breaking the 12:01 a.m. embargo embargo (ĕmbär`gō), prohibition by a country of the departure of ships or certain types of goods from its ports. Instances of confining all domestic ships to port are rare, and the Embargo Act of 1807 is the sole example of this in .

``Everyone has been completely enthusiastic,'' she said. ``It's been a complete home run.''

Industry tracker Barbara McNamara of Alexander & Associates said the video will post strong sales for several weeks before dropping off, then could see a resurgence re·sur·gence
