`THE MOLE' IS MAN'S 15 MINUTES OF FAME.

Byline: Bhavna Mistry Staff Writer

After being chosen from among hundreds of thousands of applicants to vie for a chance at $1 million, Manuel Herrera hoped to last longer than one night as a contestant on ``The Mole.''

But the 42-year-old Oxnard resident was the first of the 10 players to be eliminated from ABC's new reality TV show, which debuted 8 p.m. Tuesday. Still, for the Verizon Americast employee, his short tenure as a TV star was the experience of a lifetime.

``It's the most incredible thing I've ever experienced,'' Herrera said in a phone interview Wednesday. ``I'm so happy. I have no regrets.''

``The Mole'' started with 10 contestants who had to perform a variety of challenges - such as a free-fall parachute jump parachute jump nsaut m en parachute

Herrera scored the lowest Tuesday night, pushing him off the show.

Scott Stone, executive producer of ``The Mole,'' said Herrera and the nine other contestants were chosen based on their personalities.

``He was warm and inviting,'' Stone said of Herrera. ``Someone you would want to invite into your home every Tuesday evening.''

Though not successful, Herrera said his strategy was to make others think he was the Mole so they would be eliminated instead of him.

``I figure my role now is to open the door for all my other teammates, that will be executed,'' Herrera said. ``I'm rooting for the rest and just wishing them the best. I just hope I didn't let Oxnard down.''
