`Swede' delivers singles crown to Thurston.

Byline: Paula Lincoln The Register-Guard

David Leff-Hallstein - better known in the local tennis community as "the Swede swede: see turnip. " - put on an impressive display of power, placement and topspin at the Eugene Swim and Tennis Club on Friday and beat South Eugene's Erin Noble 6-1, 6-1 to earn the first Midwestern League singles title in Thurston school history.

"It's fun. I like high school sports. It's more team than individual though it's an individual sport," said Leff-Hallstein, a 17-year-old foreign exchange student from Kahlstad, Sweden.

30 points during the regular season, added 30 more to edge Churchill 60-59 for the team title followed by Thurston with 36.

Leff-Hallstein, who beat South's Noah Strycker 6-4, 6-2 in the semifinals, was seeded No. 2 behind Churchill's Zach Johnston. Johnston, the only player to beat Leff-Hallstein this season, lost a 3-6, 6-4, 6-3 semifinal match to Noble, then rebounded with a 6-2, 6-0 win over Strycker for third.

"Yeah, probably the best I've played the whole season by far," Leff-Hallstein said. "Erin was tired from going three sets, so I wanted to get him running - move him from side to side - so he'd get more tired."

Leff-Hallstein also acknowleged hitting to Noble's forehand forehand

Sprains occur most commonly at the ankle, knee, or wrist joints, causing pain, swelling, and difficulty in moving the involved joint. . The injury was the second of the season for Noble, who also sat out the early part of the season with an ankle injury.

"It bothered me, but it was a lot better than yesterday," said Noble, who credited Leff-Hallstein's play rather than his injury for his loss. "I think first of all that he played dynamite dynamite, explosive made from nitroglycerin and an inert, porous filler such as wood pulp, sawdust, kieselguhr, or some other absorbent material. The proportions vary in different kinds of dynamite; often ammonium nitrate or sodium nitrate is added. ."

Churchill had players on both sides of the net in the doubles final as the top-seeded duo of Sean Ogle and Stephen Wiechert beat teammates Matt Sherman and Ryan Eustis 6-1, 6-1. Ogle and Wiechert advanced to the final by defeating Sheldon's Brian Brown Brian Brown or Bryan Brown may refer to:

  • Bryan D. Brown, US general
 and Louis Degenault 6-4, 7-6 (7-3).

Sherman and Eustis knocked off the No. 4 and No. 2 seeds to earn their spot in the finals.

All four semifinalists in both singles and doubles advance to the Class 4A state tournament, May 22-24, in Beaverton.
