The incident occurred at 7:40 p.m. Friday after a robbery at the Readmore bookstore, 2604 E. Palmdale Blvd. Witnesses told deputies that while a teen-age girl distracted a store clerk, a man later identified as Lawrence Topping, 18, of Palmdale, came around the counter, shoved the clerk aside and took an undisclosed amount of cash. Shortly after the robbery, deputies found Topping standing on top of an 8-foot-high, chain-link fence along a field west of the store. Topping was holding a knife and yelling at the deputies to shoot him, deputies said. After trying for several minutes to get Topping to surrender, a deputy fired one round from a stunbag gun, striking Topping in the chest. Topping dropped the knife and came down off the fence. He was arrested without further incident, deputies said. Resembling a standard shotgun, the stunbag shotgun fires a 2-by-2-inch cloth bag filled with pellets, deputies said. Deputies later went to a home in the 38600 block of Angele Trumpet trumpet, brass wind musical instrument of part cylindrical, part conical bore, in the shape of a flattened loop and having three piston valves to regulate the pitch. Court in Palmdale and arrested Topping's 17-year-old girlfriend. Topping is being held at the Lancaster sheriff's station in lieu of Instead of; in place of; in substitution of.
