All that jazz

If Saturday night's ABC jazz special fails to attract an audience, it certainly won't be because of a lack of star power. The ``Nissan Presents a Celebration of America's Music'' event boasts Bill Cosby William Henry "Bill" Cosby, Jr., Ed.D. A veteran stand-up performer, he got his start at various clubs, then landed a vanguard role in the 1960s action show I Spy.  as host, and a lineup of musical talent including Tony Bennett, k.d. lang, Natalie Cole, Grover Washington Jr., Herbie Hancock, Stevie Wonder, Wynton Marsalis, Pat Metheny, Joshua Redman, Jon Secada, Tito Puente, Debbie Allen, Patti Austin and dozens more.

``There has long been a view that jazz doesn't work on television,'' notes producer Michael Seligman. ``I told these artists, `Guys, we really have to turn out and do a special special, or jazz will be dead on TV for another 25 years.' Everyone said yes immediately. It was the easiest time I've ever had putting together a special.''

The gala concert performance, which was taped in Washington, D.C., in November, benefits the Thelonious Monk Institute of Jazz.

According to Seligman, ``We had no egos. Everyone was truly into the music. Tony (Bennett) loved the jazz so much, in one song he forgot his own cue. And wait until you hear k.d. lang doing a tribute to Peggy Lee with Grover Washington. People won't forget it.''

Filling out her role

To gain weight for her role in CBS' upcoming ``What Happened to Bobby Earl?'' telepic, Kate Jackson says she was going through ``two six-packs a day'' - six-packs of weight-gain formula. The former ``Charlie's Angel,'' who plays a woman on a quest to uncover the truth about her son's death in the TV movie, says the decision to gain weight for the character was hers alone. ``I'm tall and thin, and I saw this woman as sort of bigger, not enormous, but with more meat on her bones.''

Jackson says that between doing a TV movie in Vancouver before ``Bobby Earl,'' shooting several Lincoln Mercury commercials and running around with her 14-month-old adopted son, Taylor, she wasn't able to gain as much weight as she'd wanted, so ``I layered up on clothing.''
