Based on James Michener's novel, ``Tales of the South Pacific Tales of the South Pacific is a Pulitzer Prize winning collection of sequentially-related short stories about World War II, written by James A. Michener in 1946. The stories were based on observations and anecdotes he acquired while stationed as a lieutenant commander in ,'' the story takes place on a South Pacific island occupied by the U.S. Navy during World War II. It's a tale of culture clashes and ahead of its time on the issue of prejudice as poignantly sung in ``You've Got to Be Carefully Taught.'' The story centers on two love stories. Navy Nurse Nellie Forbush (Stephanie Block), ``A Cockeyed Optimist'' from Arkansas, falls for French planter planter, farm or garden implement that places propagating material such as seeds or seedlings into the ground, usually in rows. Broadcasting, i.e., scattering seed in all directions, by hand followed by harrowing (see harrow) to cover the seed with soil was an early Emile de Becque (James Anest), a man with a mysterious past and two young children. Lt. Cable (Steve Scott Springer), sent to the island for a secret mission, is smitten smit·ten v. A past participle of smite. smitten Verb a past participle of smite Adjective deeply affected by love (for) Adj. 1. by the lovely Liat (Cecilia Nocum), after a meeting is arranged by the local wheeler-dealer Bloody Mary (Asuncion Deiparine Liebe). Adding lively humor with song and dance - ``There is Nothin' Like a Dame'' - are the young GIs and nurses, and especially Luther Billis (Joseph Bearss), the American counterpoint to Bloody Mary, who can't seem to stay out of trouble. War is somewhat of a distant consideration until Lt. Cable, supported by Capt. Brackett (Glenn Meister) and Cmdr. Harbison (Steve Perren), persuades the reluctant, love-smitten Emile to help spy on Japanese warships nearby. Although Nellie, with her small-town Arkansas sensibilities, has an initial problem dealing with Emile's past and his mixed-race children, she finally overcomes it and love wins out. One of the highlights of this romance was getting to hear the marvelous ``Some Enchanted en·chant tr.v. en·chant·ed, en·chant·ing, en·chants 1. To cast a spell over; bewitch. 2.
