`SLEEPERS' DEFINITELY WILL KEEP AUDIENCES AWAKE.

Byline: Marilyn Beck & Stacy Jenel Smith

Barry Levinson's ``Sleepers'' - starring Kevin Bacon, Robert Bacon, Robert, 1860–1919, American banker and government official, b. Jamaica Plain, Mass. He embarked upon a career in business and in 1894 accepted a partnership with J. P. Morgan and Company. He participated in the formation (1901) of the U.S. Steel Corp.  DeNiro, Dustin Hoffman Noun 1. ``It's not a movie that will have you walking out of a theater saying, `Wow, let's see Let's See was a Canadian television series broadcast on CBC Television between September 6, 1952 to July 4, 1953. The segment, which had a running time of 15 minutes, was a puppet show with a character named Uncle Chichimus (voice of John Conway), which presented each  it again!' '' acknowledges Steve Golin, chairman of Propaganda Films, the firm that made the drama. ``It's a rough movie, a very sad movie, the story of an American tragedy.''

Speaking of the adaptation of the controversial Lorenzo Carcaterra book - about four former childhood friends who take retribution on someone representing the suffering they endured in reform school - he added, ``It's an emotionally draining experience. But then, `Godfather' and `Schlinder's List' were the same kind of experiences. They left you feeling hollow - and people went to see them. I think they'll want to see this film, too.''

``Sleepers'' came in at $40 million - moderate by today's standards. And it went from the dawn of development to the cusp of release in just a little more than a year - remarkable, according to according to

``Everything fell into place,'' he noted. ``We bought the book on a Thursday, gave it to Barry on Friday, he agreed to direct the following Monday and a couple of weeks later decided to write the screenplay - and six to eight weeks later we were in preproduction pre·pro·duc·tion

`A' for effort: Prolific producer Stephen Cannell said he expects to see a script for the big-screen, big-budget version of his ``A Team'' TV series within the next month. If it's up to expectations, he and Universal will move on to lining up a director. As far as casting, Cannell says we shouldn't expect young copies of the television series cast that was led by the late George Peppard. ``We are changing the tone to make it less of a cartoon. The characters have been brought up to today - they're not in the style of the '80s.''

Cannell, as usual, has a full plate of projects, led by his Sept. 8-debuting ``Two,'' a syndicated thriller series with Michael Easton Michael Easton (born on February 15, 1967) is an American television actor.

Easton has made appearances on television shows such as Ally McBeal and The Practice. He had a recurring role on the science fiction television series Mutant X.

Also on the boards is the feature film version of Cannell's ``Final Victim'' novel. He expects a script for the Morgan Creek production within a month or two.

Away from it all: Anthony Hopkins Noun 1. Anthony Hopkins - Welsh film actor (born in 1937)

The Hopkinses have leased a house near Calgary, and she is expecting to be with him there on location until the movie wraps in November. They're referring to ``Book Worm'' as ``a thinking man's `Deliverance.' It's a survival picture that has Hopkins crashing in a lake.

From the inside looking out: ``Larger Than Life'' director Howard Franklin Howard Frankin is an American screenwriter and director. He wrote and directed the (now-cult) '90's comedy Quick Change, starring Bill Murray, Geena Davis and Jason Robards and The Public Eye  stresses that the November-debuting comedy is a Bill Murray

starrer. However, he does acknowledge that the extremely hot Matthew McConaughey is more important to the vehicle than anyone dreamed he'd be when he was hired to play a wacked-out trucker who transports Murray - and Murray's elephant - halfway across the country.

As it has turned out, ``The two of them function brilliantly as a comedy team,'' says Franklin. He adds that it became apparent early in shooting that he had something special in McConaughey - who had yet to catch fire in ``Lone Star'' and ``A Time to Kill.``

``You could tell from the reaction of the crew that they loved the character he was bringing to life.'' Franklin brought McConaughey back to shoot additional scenes for the comedy - expanding his role considerably - after ``A Time to Kill'' had wrapped. Says the filmmaker now, ``He jumped at the chance to step back into the comedy part - and I give him a lot of credit for that. By that time he was being inundated in·un·date
