`SCREAM' SCRIBE WILLIAMSON KEEPS ON GETTING HOTTER.

 - who's blasted into prominence as producer and/or writer of the hits ``Scream'' and ``I Know What You Did Last Summer'' and their sequels - and TV's ``Dawson's Creek'' - expects his fame to last ``for about two more seconds.'' Then, he says, ``The backlash will start, and I'll come tumbling down from my pedestal. It's just the nature of life.''

Williamson isn't worried about the tumble. ``I'll work my way back. I'll reinvent myself - just like Madonna has done.''

Right now he has more work than two - or more - men could handle.

With his big-screen ``Killing Mrs. Tingle'' just wrapped and ``Halloween H20'' opening Wednesday, Kevin's heading to Wilmington, N.C., to oversee shooting of ``Dawson's Creek'' - after a summer hiatus that saw leads Katie Holmes

December will mark the release of Williamson's ``The Faculty,'' a teen thriller with Elijah Wood described as `` `Breakfast Club' meets `Invasion of the Body Snatchers.' ''

December or early '99 will see the start of Chicago production on ``Her Leading Man,'' in which Williamson will break stride and use no actor under age 30 as he aims to ``take a story of love and present it to a very cynical '90s audience and breathe air into the genre.''

And if all that weren't enough, there's ``Scream 3.'' He has no idea when it will start, or what form it will take, or whether Neve Campbell will reprise re·prise

The fact of the matter is

Contrary to a report in Daily Variety, William Friedkin will not be directing the TV drama based on the exploits of N.Y. undercover cop Jimmy Mullan Jr. Friedkin insists that his noninvolvement non·in·volve·ment

and Dwight Hemion are producing for the Fox cable network. ``But I was shown a prospectus of the story and had grave doubts that everything Jimmy Mullan claimed was true. I never committed to the project.''

In a conversation with this column, Mullan, who has locked horns with the Manhattan DA's office for years, seemed shocked and surprised that Friedkin wouldn't be directing ``Hung Out to Dry.'' Smith did confirm that ``Friedkin is not attached to the project.'' He also said, ``No one has ever contacted me about stopping the project. I can't even tell you yet to what extent - if any - it will involve the N.Y. DA's office. The film will deal with Mullan's life and exploits - but the story has yet to be written.''

The cable flick centers on a psychology student who gets a job at a place called Wonder View Apartments and finds himself learning more than he bargained for from the tenants about all sorts of psychology - criminal, sexual and abnormal.
