One of the largest of the larger-than-life heroes is Samson, who despite himself saved his people from the Philistines. A new movie miniseries

``Samson and Delilah'' features an exceptional cast and director. Dennis Hopper plays the Philistine General Tariq, who comes to doubt the foundation of his own faith as the Philistine empire disintegrates. Diana Rigg plays Samson's mother, told by God that her son would lead his people from bondage. British actor Michael Gambon plays King Hanum. In the lead roles are Elizabeth Hurley as Delilah and Eric Thal as Samson. Thal, a relative newcomer, plays Samson with an athletic grace and openness that stands in contrast to the stiffness one usually gets from heroic movie strongmen. His previous credits include roles in ``Six Degrees of Separation,'' and, opposite Melanie Griffith, the male lead in Sidney Lumet's ``A Stranger Among Us.'' He currently is finishing a run in the play ``Sex and Longing'' with Sigourney Weaver at the Court theater in New York There are many famous theaters in New York, most notably the Broadway theatres in New York City.

.

Thal was happy to take the role because it afforded him a challenge. ``I'm always excited by the idea of making choices that are departures. It keeps things interesting for me,'' he said. ``It's easy to become typecast in Hollywood, so I think it's a great idea to try to have some variety. And I thought that the script really allowed for a lot, especially in conjunction with a director like Nick. There's so much for an actor to do. Samson's journey is such an interesting one.''

The role of Samson proved physically demanding for Thal, which was no surprise. Filming in Morocco, the cast and crew faced the desert winds and the vagaries of weather and a tight shooting schedule. ``We went through some different environmental changes in climate and altitude,'' Thal said, ``and I think that initially affected us. The winds were really powerful in Morocco. The fight sequence, for example, with the rescuing of Naomi, that was one of the windiest days we had. I don't know Don't know (DK, DKed)

On film, one can see the wind blowing through Jale Arikan's hair - she plays Naomi - and when Thal, who had not yet seen the finished film, was told this, he said, ``Oh good. Maybe it worked for the scene.''

Thal shares many intimate love scenes with Hurley. ``I really enjoyed working with her. I think it rained only three hours the entire time I was in Morocco. But because of the threat of rain, we had to switch a scene and we went directly into our most intimate scenes, which we shot first.

``And I actually think that may have turned out to be a good thing,'' he continued. ``We were thrown into a situation unexpectedly, and most of our scenes together were these intimate bedroom scenes, and I think things worked out well.''
