`SAFEWALK' PLAN WOULD SHIELD KIDS.

Byline: Karen Karen

Any member of a variety of tribal peoples of southern Myanmar (Burma). Constituting the second largest minority in Myanmar, the Karen are not a unitary group in any ethnic sense, as they differ among themselves linguistically, religiously, and economically.

Uniformed volunteers would keep watch from their front yards or sidewalks on designated routes, under a proposed ``safewalk'' program to make the streets safer for children walking to and from school.

The idea for the program came from a 15-member city task force on crime made up of representatives from the city, the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department This article is about the Los Angeles County Sherriff's Department, not to be confused with the smaller Los Angeles County Police

``We can enhance the safety of kids going to and from school, especially at a time when we have gangs,'' said Lancaster Councilman Jim Jeffra, who formed the task force. ``It's another step in the safety factor.''

The program would operate in the morning and afternoon hours when children are walking to and from school.

The task force is working out the routes and is seeking about 400 volunteers, who will be screened and trained by sheriff's deputies through the city's VOICE (Volunteers Organized to Improve the Community Environment) program, said Jeffra.

In addition, a VOICE patrol car would be available during the program's operation, Jeffra said. Incorporated into the program will be the ``safe house'' program, where children can seek help at houses marked with special placards.

Depending on the number of volunteers who are screened, a test ``safewalk'' program may start up as early as January, officials said. Jeffra said the program should be in full swing by July.

The ``safewalk'' volunteers will probably wear the same uniforms used by VOICE volunteers, Jeffra said.

``We will target walking routes in the district at each school site, and look for parents and volunteers to be designated as safewalk volunteers,'' said Lancaster School District Lancaster School District may refer to:

The volunteers can keep an eye out for any gang activity or suspicious people, Tepe said.

``It's a way to have people outside on the walking routes with uniforms. If there are any problems, the children can run to the people and tell them,'' Tepe said.
