`RYAN,' `PRIMARY' WRITERS AMONG WGA AWARD NOMINEES.

The writers who penned the screenplays for ``Saving Private Ryan,'' ``Shakespeare in Love'' and ``Primary Colors'' were among the nominees announced Wednesday for Writers Guild of America's 51st annual awards.

For best screenplay written directly for the screen, Robert Rodat Robert Rodat (born New Hampshire, 1953) is an American screenwriter. After noticing his son's birthday (June 6) shared the same date as the Battle of Normandy, he was inspired to write his Oscar-nominated script for Saving Private Ryan (1998).  (``Saving Private Ryan'') and Marc Norman Marc Norman (born Los Angeles, California, 1941) is an American screenwriter.

He won, with Tom Stoppard the Oscar for Best Original Screenplay, in the 71st Academy Awards of 1998, for his script of "Shakespeare in Love".

For best screenplay based on material previously produced or published, Elaine May (``Primary Colors'') will compete with Steven Zaillian (``A Civil Action''), Bill Condon (``Gods and Monsters''), Scott Frank (``Out of Sight'') and Scott B. Smith (``A Simple Plan'').

 East selected the nominees from among 213 films - 122 written directly for the screen and 91 based on material previously produced or published.

Winners will be announced Feb. 20 at the annual WGA awards ceremonies on both coasts. The West Coast ceremony will be held at the Beverly Hilton hotel, and the other gala will be in New York New York, state, United States
