`RUNAWAY' CAN'T ELUDE ITS OWN PREDICTABILITY.Byline: - David Kronke In a season cluttered with serialized thrillers with mythologies that have been quite meticulously considered by their creators, ``Runaway'' scarcely seems thought-out at all. Donnie Wahlberg Donald Edmond Wahlberg, Jr. (born August 17, 1969) is an American singer, actor and producer. He was a member of the popular 1980s and 1990s boy band New Kids on the Block and is the older brother of fellow actor Mark Wahlberg. stars as Paul, a high-powered attorney framed for the murder of his mistress and colleague. He does what any character in a mediocre thriller would do -- grabs his wife (Leslie Hope) and kids (Dustin Milligan, Sarah Ramos and Nathan Gamble) and goes on the lam. It's no `Fugitive' The classic '60s series ``The Fugitive'' worked so well because Richard Kimble (David Janssen), though pursued by a zealous officer, was fairly footloose foot·loose adj. Every episode concerned his involvement with all sorts of characters he met while traversing the country in his quest to clear his name. That's not really much of an option here, with dad saddled with a bitter wife and three petulant pet·u·lant adj. 1. Unreasonably irritable or ill-tempered; peevish. 2. Contemptuous in speech or behavior. [Latin petul kids (who must be enrolled in public schools and can't be trusted to remember their new names) in tow. They move to a small Iowa town where every neighbor is a potential busybody bus·y·bod·y n. pl. bus·y·bod·ies A person who meddles or pries into the affairs of others. busybody Noun pl -bodies a meddlesome, prying, or officious person apparently just itching to unearth dirt on the newcomers. The kids begin new friendships, even though they could compromise the family's secrets and will invariably in·var·i·a·ble adj. Not changing or subject to change; constant. in·var i·a·bil be alienated anew when the inevitable time comes for them to vamoose yet again. So many questions It turns out the family escaped en masse because those who framed Paul also marked his family for death. But why? Why would anyone who so ingeniously framed this guy want him to disappear when he could still do them harm? Why would they want his family dead, as well? Anyone suckered by tonight's climactic misdirection MISDIRECTION, practice. An error made by a judge in charging the jury in a special case. 2. Such misdirection is either in relation to matters of law or matters of fact. 3.-1. clearly hasn't paid attention to the editing in any movie or TV show they've ever watched. And a future episode suggests that Paul and his family's lives will be a goofy roundelay roun·de·lay n. A poem or song with a regularly recurring refrain. [Middle English, alteration (influenced by lai, poem, song)of Old French rondelet, diminutive of rondel of close scrapes with the law, almost-blown covers and high-school soap-opera antics, all while Paul takes incremental baby steps to (probably never) solving the mystery. RUNAWAY - Two stars What: An attorney (Donnie Wahlberg) framed for murdering his mistress takes his family on the lam. Where: The CW (Channel 5). When: 9 tonight. In a nutshell: Hard to buy into. |
