Perhaps not everything is rosy in daytime television Daytime television is the general term for television shows produced that are intended to air during the daytime hours.

While some shows are identified as "daytime TV shows", "daytime television" is not a genre per se.

She'll tape her show the same day it airs.

``I didn't want to have a control room full of executives going, `Can you re-do that interview?' '' she said. ``I want to sink or swim on my own merits for an hour a day. I think that risk factor makes for more entertaining TV.''

O'Donnell started her career as a stand-up stand·up or stand-up

comedian, and also has done cable TV specials, starred on Broadway in a ``Grease!'' revival and appeared in several movies.

Her latest venture means she'll be able to spend more time with Parker, the young son she adopted a year ago.

``I've done one movie (`Harriet the Spy,' due in theaters in July) since he arrived,'' she said, ``and during that 23-day shoot, I only saw him for an hour each day. That is not the kind of parent I want to be.

``I want to be hands-on and full-time, the one who's there when he takes his first step,'' she said. ``A movie schedule is just not conducive to that.''

That realization led O'Donnell to mull other options that would allow her to continue her career and also give her sufficient parenting time.

``Having filled in for Kathie Lee Gifford on a few occasions when she was absent from `Live! With Regis & Kathie Lee,' I found that to be enjoyable as well as good for parenting,'' she said. ``There had been interest in me (as a host) in the late-night arena, but I never really wanted to get into that ballgame, because I felt the audience was already covered between `The Tonight Show' and `Late Show With David Letterman “Late Show” redirects here. ``Then, when I filled in for Kathie Lee and there was speculation she might be leaving, I called my agent and said, `If she really is going to leave, could you call them and see if they would be interested in me?' Then, she said, `Well, if you're really interested, why don't you do your own (talk show)?' She started calling around, and that's how this whole thing started.''

O'Donnell finds it bittersweet bittersweet, name for two unrelated plants, belonging to different families, both fall-fruiting woody vines sometimes cultivated for their decorative scarlet berries.  now to consider that the ``Regis & Kathie Lee'' show is her only real competition for what she hopes to achieve in daytime TV.

`` `Mike & Maty' and `George and Alana' tried to copy them,'' O'Donnell said, ``but (Philbin and Gifford) have been on the air successfully for so many years, that combination is really enjoyable to watch. However, they're more conversational, and we're going to be more presentational.''

As it happens, O'Donnell's show hits the air the same day ``The Mommies'' - Marilyn Kentz and Caryl Kristensen Caryl Kristensen is one-half of the comedy troupe The Mommies. ``I'm a big fan of theirs,'' O'Donnell said. ``I hope I'm not on against them. (My show is) all celebrities, like Merv Griffin used to do. This will not be `The Oprah Winfrey Show' or `Leeza,' but `The Tonight Show' in the daytime.

``I'll come out and do a topical monologue, then we'll go to the first guest. We might do a cooking thing with an audience member, then have a performance segment, then end with another guest.''

O'Donnell said, ``This is a kind of show that hasn't been on in 20 years, and that's why, initially, we had a hard time convincing stations.''
