`RABBIT' HAS HOPPED IN VALLEY SINCE 1943.

Byline: BETTIE RENCORET SENIOR COLUMNIST

PALMDALE - Bob ``Rabbit'' Montgomery has been around the Antelope Valley This article is about the Los Angeles County region. For the census-designated place in Wyoming, see Antelope Valley-Crestview, Wyoming.

The Antelope Valley
``since Hector was a pup'' or, at least, since 1943, and he's seen it all. He's not only seen it all, he's done it all.

He got the nickname ``Rabbit'' from a Scoutmaster when he was 12 and the name stuck.

``My friends have called me that for years,'' he said.

In the early years he was employed for two years by Civil Service in the supply depot at the U.S. Marine Corps Base in Mojave before it was closed.

Then he did a tour in the U.S. Navy from 1950 to 1953 during the Korean War Korean War, conflict between Communist and non-Communist forces in Korea from June 25, 1950, to July 27, 1953. At the end of World War II, Korea was divided at the 38th parallel into Soviet (North Korean) and U.S. (South Korean) zones of occupation. . When he was mustered out, his gregarious nature (he really likes people) got him lots of jobs.

He worked for Earle Flemming's machinery overhaul business, then laid carpet for a while and worked at Montgomery Ward, but he really liked bartending best and he was good at it.

``I tended the bar in all the old places that are long gone now. Remember the old Horn Inn, Cork Room, Club Le Basque, Alec's? I worked all of those, both the bowling alleys and Sarge's in Quartz Hill. I loved them all. Club Le Basque and Alec's mostly drew the judges, attorneys, doctors and NASA NASA: see National Aeronautics and Space Administration.

He sighed. ``Those were the days when nobody locked their doors or their cars and a woman could walk down any street alone at night and not be afraid of being attacked. It's sure not like that anymore.''

Montgomery was born in Creston, Iowa, on Aug. 31, 1932, and came to Bakersfield with his family in 1942 when he was 9 years old, because his railroad boiler-maker father was transferred.

After Bakersfield they moved to Mojave where, Montgomery said, he received most of his early education.

He attended Antelope Valley Joint Union High School and enlisted in the Navy before graduating.

``You still had to register for the draft in those days and I didn't want to get drafted so I joined the Navy,'' he said.

He doesn't tend bar anymore now but he's not retired. For the past five years he has worked part-time at Target.

Montgomery and his significant other, Peggy, have been together for 17 years and he has adopted her children: Gail Barnett and Christy Mahorter, both of Lancaster, and Lisa Fabian of Palmdale.

He's a member of VFW See Video for Windows.  Post 7283, American Legion American Legion, national association of male and female war veterans, founded (1919) in Paris. Membership is open to veterans of World Wars I and II, the Korean War, and the Vietnam War.  Post 311, and he and Peggy belong to the J&J Social and Travel Club.

``For recreation we don't do too much right now because Peggy has a hip and knee problem that's pretty restrictive but we do a little traveling with the club,'' he said.

He said the years have brought a lot of changes to the valley, ``some good and some bad, but that's progress and we have to learn to live with it.''

Menus for the week at the senior life nutrition sites in Lancaster and Palmdale have been announced. All meals include bread, margarine and coffee, tea or milk, for the suggested donation of $2.
