Byline: Marilyn Beck & Stacy Jenel Smith

If you're one of the multitude that made Quincy Jones' ``Q's Jook Joint'' album a success, get ready: Here comes ``Q's Jook Joint,'' the movie.

production is being scripted, with hopes set on a fall production start. ``It'll be a dramatic film that involves comedy, song, a love triangle A love triangle is a romantic relationship involving three people (known as a triad). While it can refer to two people independently romantically linked with a third, it usually implies that each of the three people has some kind of relationship to the other two.  and suspense,'' Jones said.

He said he has long toyed with the thought of using a jook joint - a key backdrop for African-American entertainment for 100 years - as the setting for a movie. Jones also said the ``Jook Joint'' film will involve some or all of the musical talent that appeared on the record - names like Stevie Wonder, Ray Charles For the composer and conductor of the Ray Charles Singers, see .

Jones will conduct a big band, Tony Bennett will sing, and Phil Collins ``will do nothing but play the drums until the last couple of numbers,'' laughed Jones - meaning that Collins will vocalize at the end of the performance. He added, ``Phil has been playing drums with a big band and he's having a ball. That's all he wants to do lately. I understand. Big band music is my first love, too.''

Jones and Collins will continue their latest musical collaboration at the Montreux Jazz Festival The Montreux Jazz Festival is the best-known music festival in Switzerland. It is held annually in early July in Montreux on the shores of Lake Geneva. History

And: Quincy said it'll likely be a March '97 production start for his ``Don Quixote'' movie - which is set to team John Cleese as Quixote with Robin Williams as Sancho Panza. Within a matter of days, a decision should be made as to which of some four studios bidding for the property will get it.

Graduation imagination: Jones spent part of last weekend as a commencement speaker and recipient of an honorary doctorate at the University of Connecticut The University of Connecticut is the State of Connecticut's land-grant university. It was founded in 1881 and serves more than 27,000 students on its six campuses, including more than 9,000 graduate students in multiple programs.

. He was part of the afternoon's graduation ceremony; his friend Bill Cosby was part of the morning's proceedings. Jones tried to contact Cosby beforehand to arrange a post-graduation get-together, and the two kept missing each other's calls. Jones finally got through to the Cos - when Bill was at the podium to give his address. Cosby not only took the call, he held the cell phone out to the students massed in front of him and said, ``I have Quincy Jones on the line - say hello!'' And they did.

Graduation tribulation: And Piper Laurie was on stage at the University of Tucson, waiting to be awarded an honorary doctorate in fine arts, when she noticed she was listed on the program as commencement speaker. ``No one bothered to tell me I was supposed to be the speaker,'' revealed the thrice thrice

Oscar-nominated actress who plays George Clooney's mother on ``ER.'' ``It was awful. I was living every actor's nightmare - getting up on stage and having nothing to say. I stood up, addressed the crowd, explained the situation and recalled that the last time I was in a cap and gown I was 17 and graduating from the Universal Studio School. I spoke for about two or three minutes and reminded myself that one of the reasons I became an actress was because I needed someone to write my lines.''

The industry eye: Get the feeling there isn't much to see at movie houses this spring? Well, just wait until next year. This year, Warner Bros BROS Brothers

. pushed forward the so-called summer cinema season to early May with ``Twister,'' and with the picture initially having virtually no big-time competition, it's done spectacularly. And with Paramount opening ``Mission: Impossible'' on a record-breaking 4,500-plus screens, that studio ended up with a record-breaking opening for its picture. 20th Century Fox senior vice president Tom Sherak has said he'd love to open ``Independence Day'' on the same number of screens, but that won't be possible with all the competition in July.

Just wait - next year, studios will be tripping over one another to get their summer product out of the gate first. Also look for an all-out war for theater space, with mega-releases that go beyond ``Mission: Impossible's.''
