`Planet of the Apes' to Digitally Release Using Texas Instruments DLP Cinema Technology.

Business/Technology Editors

DALLAS--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Aug. 10, 2001

DLP (Digital Light Processing) A data projection technology from TI that produces clear, readable images on screens in lit rooms. DLP is used in all types of projection devices, from data projectors that weigh only a few pounds to large rear-projection TVs to electronic  Cinema(TM) technology and processes again used from

) today announced that Twentieth Century Fox's `Planet of the Apes' would be digitally released on August 10th to nine movie theatres in North America North America, third largest continent (1990 est. pop. 365,000,000), c.9,400,000 sq mi (24,346,000 sq km), the northern of the two continents of the Western Hemisphere.  and to one theatre in London, England on August 17th, all equipped with DLP Cinema(TM) projectors. This title becomes the 32nd major motion picture to have been released in DLP Cinema(TM) technology.

The release of `Planet of the Apes' marks the third digital release from Fox, following previous digital releases `Star Wars: Episode I - The Phantom Menace' and `Titan AE'.

Notable for this digital release - as for the other thirty-one movies previously released - DLP Cinema(TM) technology has been involved throughout the digital cinema process: not only are projectors using DLP Cinema(TM) technology involved in the showing of the movies, but also in the post-production process. The mastering process also includes DLP Cinema(TM) processes that ensure ultimate quality and compatibility with DLP Cinema(TM) projectors: it is managed on behalf of TI by Entertainment Technology Consultants.

Doug Darrow, Business Manager for DLP Cinema(TM) at TI's DLP(TM) Products division explains: "What it means is that the studios are guaranteed that, if the same DLP Cinema projectors and processes are used to create and exhibit movies, and system components which are `DLP Cinema Ready' are used throughout the distribution process, the audience will see the exact same image as the creators saw in post-production."

The "Planet of the Apes" release is also notable because it marks the debut of a new playback product from Avica called the Avica FilmStore(TM) Digital Cinema Player. Avica joins QuVis and Grass Valley as being able to demonstrate viable digital cinema playback technologies for use with DLP Cinema(TM) projectors. The `DLP Cinema(TM) Ready' Avica FilmStore will be used at the AMC (Advanced Mezzanine Card) See AdvancedTCA.  Empire theatre on 42nd Street in New York City New York City: see New York, city.

"These are important steps forward for digital cinema," continued Darrow. "First, surpassing thirty digital releases demonstrates that content supply for digital cinema continues to gain momentum. Second, we have a new entrant into the digital cinema server arena, meaning that there is increased competitive choice as well as growth in the infrastructure required to make digital cinema a reality."

TI's DLP Cinema(TM) projection technology has already been exposed to over two million movie-goers throughout the world. These extensive field demonstrations began on June 18th 1999 with all-digital showings at two North American North American

The total number of installed DLP Cinema(TM) projectors is now thirty-eight in theatres and sixteen in post-production facilities, with installations in cities around the world from Los Angeles Los Angeles (lôs ăn`jələs, lŏs, ăn`jəlēz'), city (1990 pop. 3,485,398), seat of Los Angeles co., S Calif.; inc. 1850.  to London, from San Diego to Seoul and from Boston to Brussels. Further installations are expected in the coming months. See www.dlpcinema.com for more information on DLP Cinema(TM) technology.

Texas Instruments has announced agreements with BARCO, Christie Inc. and Digital Projection (an Imax company) under the terms of which those companies will develop and market digital cinema projectors based on DLP Cinema(TM) technology.

DLP Cinema(TM) technology is Digital Light Processing(TM) technology specifically adapted for the needs of the movie industry. By comparison with the industry-leading large venue DLP(TM) technology-based projectors on which it is based, it features even higher contrast, together with color processing designed to replicate the visual experience of film: commercial projectors featuring DLP(TM) technology are designed primarily for video and graphics applications. Today, TI supplies DLP(TM) subsystems to more than thirty of the world's top projector manufacturers, who then design, manufacture and market DLP(TM) technology-based projectors. There are now over fifty products featuring DLP(TM) technology in the market. Since early 1996, over 750,000 DLP(TM) subsystems have been shipped. Over the past four years, DLP(TM) technology-based projectors have consistently won some of the audio-visual industry's most prestigious awards.
