`Pick Local for the Holidays'.

The Wachusett Chamber of Commerce is rolling out "Pick Local for the Holidays," a campaign to promote shopping locally that supports local businesses in the Wachusett Region.

This campaign will include coupons, the annual window decorating contest, and exciting new events and promotional opportunities.

"Pick Local for the Holidays" will include a series of events beginning with a "Shop Locally Day," scheduled for Saturday, Nov. 21. This weekend was chosen to encourage the community to get a head start on holiday shopping and not compete with the busy Thanksgiving weekend.

A "Pick Local Scavenger Hunt scavenger hunt
n.
A game in which individuals or teams try to locate and bring back miscellaneous items on a list.
" will begin on Nov. 21 and will run until Monday, Dec. 7. The scavenger hunt will be open to the public and is designed create energy and enthusiasm around the shop local day and to encourage the public to visit and support local businesses during the holiday season.

The Scavenger Hunt will include cards similar to Bingo cards with a listing of all participating locations. The public will have two-and-a-half weeks to visit each business, where they will get their card marked at each location. Once the entire card is completed, participants will submit their card to be entered to win a grand prize. The winner will be drawn and announced on Thursday, Dec. 10, at the Chamber's Holiday Business After Hours Adv. 1. after hours - not during regular hours; "he often worked after hours"  and "It's A Wonderful Community" Celebration at the Strand Theatre in Clinton, which will feature a screening of "It's a Wonderful Life."

A "Pick Local Window Decorating Contest" will also begin on Nov. 21 and will run until Monday, Dec. 14. This annual event is also designed to bring attention to local businesses and encourage the community to shop locally. See the list of businesses participating on this page. Ballots for the scavenger hunt are available at participating businesses.

"We are excited about rolling out this special holiday promotion," said Laura Hume, director of sales at the Wachusett Village Inn and Conference Center in Westminster and the Chamber's Tourism Committee chairman. "We hope that this campaign will help to support the many unique and wonderful businesses within our local community, in what may be a slow holiday season."

Studies show that when you shop and do business locally, more than half of those revenues stay within your community. Local business owners bank at local banks, hire local accountants, dine at local restaurants, advertise in local media and require many other local services. When you do business in your neighborhood, you save gas, save money, save time and save jobs. All while supporting your local economy.
