"We've got the right hall for it." And they've got a lineup of top-notch pianists. So for the third year in a row they'll be going for it - a "Duo Piano Gala" at 8 p.m. Saturday in Tuckerman Hall, at Salisbury and Tuckerman streets, Worcester. The orchestra will present the talents of eight locally and internationally renowned pianists. With the orchestra's Steinway Model "B" and "C" concert grand pianos on the stage, the pianists will be showcased in combinations of two, three, four, five and six. They are not dueling pianists. The dual pianos they'll be playing on and the works they're performing represent the ultimate in collaboration and working together. One of the works will see four pianists at one piano, Levenson said. Among the celebrated pieces to be performed Saturday are Bach's Italian Concerto (arranged for three pianists), Brahms' variation of a Theme by Haydn (for two pianists), Poulnec's Sonata for two Pianos (two pianists), and Tchaikovsky's Polonaise polonaise (pŏl'ənāz`, ō'–), Polish national dance, in moderate 3–4 time and of slow, stately movements. It evolved from peasant and court processions and ceremonies of the late 16th cent. and was later used by J. S. and W. from "Euegene Onegin" (arranged for four pianists by Franz Liszt). Also, the evening will feature the North American premiere of Concerto for Two Pianos by Georgian composer Elizbar Lomdaridze. The work will be performed by his daughter, Tea Lomdaridze, and Myron Romanul. Kallin Johnson's arrangement of Fats Waller's "Handful of Keys" will feature five pianists, and Russian jazz composer Nikolai Kapustin's "Paraphrase on Manteca by Dizzie Gillespie" will also be getting its North American premiere. The first dual piano gala was held in 2007 to celebrate the orchestra's possession of two pianos - a new Steinway Model "B" and its renovated 1902 Model "C" Steinway.
