RUSSELL Goodway said today it was ``heartening'' to learn that people want to seek election to the council.

He added: In a multimember ward it is difficult to see how anyone can successfully campaign against any individual candidate. Any candidate will be one amongst many.

``In any case personality contests rarely get people anywhere - certainly not the local electors electors, in the history of the Holy Roman Empire, the princes who had the right to elect the German kings or, more exactly, the kings of the Romans (Holy Roman emperors). .

``The electors of Ely will, as they always have, want to make up their minds on the important issues that face them in their everyday lives. I predict that there will have little sympathy with anyone who is trying to turn an important election into a trivial personality contest. ``They will consider the issues and conclude that independent councillors are rarely effective in the modernised Adj. 1. modernised - brought up to date; "modernized methods"

 world of local government.

``It is important to Ely to be represented by Labour councillors serving in a Labourcontrolled council. That is the way to achieve improvements in their neighbourhood.
