`PRIVATE RYAN' HAS BEACHHEAD AT THE BOX OFFICE.

Byline: Dave McNary Daily News Staff Writer

Steven Spielberg's ``Saving Private Ryan'' easily won the box office war with an estimated $30.1 million at 2,463 theaters during its Friday-Sunday opening, studio sources said Sunday.

``This opening really puts DreamWorks on the map as a top studio,'' Bucksbaum said of the 4-year-old enterprise headed by Spielberg, Jeffrey Katzenberg and David Geffen. ``The numbers are just phenomenal for a film that runs two hours and 45 minutes, which limits most theaters to three showings a day.''

Bucksbaum predicted ``Saving Private Ryan'' will take in between $155 million and $170 million domestically, placing it among the top 50 U.S. grossers of all time. He forecast $150 million overseas, where co-financier Paramount is handling the $70 million film.

DreamWorks distribution chief James Tharp said the studio will meet today with Technicolor representatives over the delivery problem, the first to occur on a major release within memory.

Final figures for this weekend will be released today.
