on Sunday, and he gave many of them a present by booting home a $7.60 winner in his first ride of the afternoon.

The cheers were a little louder than usual when the photo-finish camera showed Pincay and the filly Zairsaname had edged Rene Douglas and Sarita Sarita in the second race. It was the 10th win of the meet for Pincay, who is off to a fast start, and the 8,504th of his career, putting him within 329 of Bill Shoemaker's record.

Pincay had a second and a fourth from four other mounts on Laffit Pincay Jr. Day.

The Panamanian jockey actually turned 50 on Dec. 29, but Santa Anita chose Sunday to honor him with a winner's circle win·ner's circle

When Santa Anita officials wheeled out a six-foot-long birthday cake, Pincay's mates in the jocks' room picked him up and plopped him down in the middle of it.

He was presented with a huge birthday card signed by thousands of fans.

Addressing the crowd of 35,109, Pincay referred to last year's worrisome reports about a struggle for control of the 60-year-old Arcadia racetrack.

``Lately, there have been a lot of rumors of Santa Anita maybe closing sometime in the future,'' he said. ``Today, as my birthday wish, I hope Santa Anita would race and stay open forever.
