`PHANTOM MENACE' TICKET SALES START TODAY.

Byline: Paul O'Donoghue Daily News Staff Writer

While some fanatics in Los Angeles Los Angeles (lôs ăn`jələs, lŏs, ăn`jəlēz'), city (1990 pop. 3,485,398), seat of Los Angeles co., S Calif.; inc. 1850.  have camped out for weeks to get tickets for the latest ``Star Wars'' incarnation incarnation, the assumption of human form by a god, an idea common in religion. In early times the idea was expressed in the belief that certain living men, often kings or priests, were divine incarnations. , things are a bit more laid back in Ventura County.

In fact, there wasn't a camper or line in sight Tuesday even though tickets for the super-hyped ``Star Wars: Episode 1 - The Phantom Menace'' will go on sale at midday today at cinemas throughout the county.

``We've had a lot of people asking and calling about it,'' said Tracy Cameron, manager of Moorpark Regal Cinema 8 complex. ``Most people have been asking about when they go on sale.''

The movie, which will open in about 3,000 theaters nationwide May 19, is the prequel pre·quel

It raised a quarter of a billion dollars, the largest startup funding in history, but could not create its 2.5" superchip.  that began in 1977 and has been popular for generations.

But even with tickets going on sale today and some lines expected to form, Cameron said he doesn't think things will be too hectic hec·tic

. The cinema has hired ``a couple of extra personnel,'' typically brought on to handle the summer spike in movie-going, earlier than usual, he said.

As for other preparations? ``We're opening an extra box (office) for presales,'' said Cameron.

And things were similarly quiet at the Mann Janss Marketplace 9 in Thousand Oaks Thousand Oaks, residential city (1990 pop. 104,352), Ventura co., S Calif., in a farm area; inc. 1964. Avocados, citrus, vegetables, strawberries, and nursery products are grown. , where tickets also will go on sale at midday today.

``We've had people calling, but I think everyone is starting to line up (today) from what I've heard,'' said Mann employee Kim Herrera.

However, the complex will be taking ``extra security precautions'' to cater to the crowds, said Herrera. While extra security personnel haven't been hired for the expected sales rush today, the shopping center shopping center, a concentration of retail, service, and entertainment enterprises designed to serve the surrounding region. The modern shopping center differs from its antecedents—bazaars and marketplaces—in that the shops are usually amalgamated into  that houses the cinema complex will post guards nearby when the movie is showing.

The movie will be shown five times daily at both the Regal complex in Moorpark and the Mann cinema in Thousand Oaks, with a special showing at 12:01 a.m. May 19 at both.

After that, the movie will be shown at midnight Fridays and Saturdays in addition to the daily shows at both theaters. The Simi Valley Simi Valley (sē`mē, sĭm`ē), city (1990 pop. 100,217), Ventura co., SW Calif. in an oil, fruit, and farm region; laid out 1887, inc. 1969.  Mann also will show the film.

So why haven't members of the ``Star Wars'' fan family here staked out a pavement claim weeks in advance, like their cousins in Los Angeles?

``I think it's because Ventura County is a small county and there will be quite a few theaters showing it,'' said Herrera.

Added Cameron, ``This is Moorpark.''
