`Open an eBook' Campaign to Promote Literacy, Accessibility and Enhanced Reading; Authors, Publishers, Libraries and Technologists Unite to Expand Reading with eBooks.

"Open an eBook See e-book. ...Discover New Worlds of Reading(SM)" is the name of a campaign recently announced by the Open eBook An XML-based standard for electronic books and Web publishing from the International Digital Publishing Forum (www.idpf.org). Introduced in 1999 and officially known as the "Open eBook Publication Structure Specification" (OEBPS), Open eBook publications are not read directly by an e-book  Forum (OeBF) board of directors and membership. Joining in this campaign are leading eBook technology vendors, publishers, authors, libraries and educators. The Open eBook Forum is the leading international trade and standards organization A standards organization, also sometimes referred to as a standards body, a standards development organization or SDO (depending on what is being referenced), is any entity whose primary activities are developing, coordinating, promulgating, revising, amending,  for development of the eBook industry.

Key messages of the Open an eBook (www.openanebook.org) campaign program include:

-- Open an eBook...to provide access to more books for people with print
disabilities

-- Open an eBook...to enhance reading with interactivity and extend beyond the
book

-- Open an eBook...to provide portability and mobility of content

-- Open an eBook...to encourage reading programs for education and learning and


-- Open an eBook...to expand the joy of reading


Programs under the campaign include the announcement of a free eBookstore for young readers, new initiatives being developed and launched by the OeBF Education Committee and the OeBF eBook Industy Special Interest Group, and many ongoing eBook programs promoted by OeBF Members. "The Open an eBook Campaign is a multi-year education effort sponsored by the OeBF to promote the value of eBooks to readers worldwide," stated OeBF President Steve Potash potash: see potassium carbonate.

Publishers, libraries, schools, educators and eBook technology companies are encouraged to join the Campaign, which will be united by the "Open an eBook" brand. The Campaign, which was made a priority by the OeBF Board of Directors, will officially launch to the public during January 2002. The Open an eBook Web site will be the main vehicle for distribution of information about the Campaign, and will include public announcements, Campaign updates, downloadable logos and other tools, as well as opportunities to share information and provide feedback.
