) interstate natural gas transmission unit, today announced a month-long "open season" for shippers interested in reserving firm gas storage capacity now under development at the companies' facility in Saltville, Virginia Saltville is a town in Smyth County, Virginia, United States. The population was 2,204 at the 2000 census. History
Saltville was named for the salt marshes in the area. Prior to European settlement, these marshes attracted local wildlife.

The company is offering 1.0 Billion cubic feet (Bcf) of capacity during the open season bidding period, which begins at 9:00 a.m. EST EST electroshock therapy.

 on March 31 and ends at 5:00 p.m. EST on April 30. Half the capacity will be available August 1, 2004; the remaining 0.5 Bcf of capacity will become available August 1, 2005.

Saltville Gas Storage, which offers quick-fill, quick-withdrawal capabilities of salt cavern storage, is the only such facility in the mid-Atlantic region. It is strategically positioned on Duke Energy Gas Transmission's East Tennessee East Tennessee is a name given to approximately the eastern third of the state of Tennessee. Unlike the names given to regions or portions of many of U.S. states, the term East Tennessee can be precisely defined.  Natural Gas interstate pipeline system and its recently-completed Patriot extension. Saltville Gas Storage began service last fall and was fully contracted for its inaugural winter heating season. At a planned expansion rate of 1.0 Bcf a year, 0.5 Bcf has already been contracted for the 2004-2005 heating season.

 are developing a projected 12.0 Bcf of natural gas storage capacity at Saltville in two phases. The capacity being made available through this open season is part of the Phase 1 development of 6.0 Bcf over five years. The facility is managed by Virginia Gas Pipeline Company, a subsidiary of NUI Corporation.
